Horse Training

The horse language is no magic. Understanding the equine language paves the way to mutual cooperation between horse and human. Horses learn with curiosity and are willing to work with you as long as they feel they are being understood and valued. Training and even the correction of undesirable behavior is, thus, becoming a pleasure rather than a nuisance.

Upon your wish, your horse(s) can be brought to me for training, no matter if it is to reestablish your partnership, leading without any stress, if your horse refuses to enter the trailer, to acquaint your horse with "fearful" stimuli, to start your horse or for any other unwanted behavior where you tried everything but still are clueless how to handle it.

  • Trailer Loading ...

A horse trailer to a horse is like a dark and threatening cave where it certainly encounters a life threatening situation. Understanding this basic principle, I am responsive to the horse's concerns until it willingly loads and regards the trailer as a safe rather than dangerous location.

  • Non-Spookyness ...

e.g. plastic, tin cans, water, anti repellant spray, etc.

To secure the survival as flight animal and prey of predators, horses have to distinguish within instants between "life threatening" and "harmless". In general, everything foreign is categorized as life threatening. With the right approach, however, horses learn quickly that even rustling plastic bags or clattering tin cans have nothing in common with horse eating monsters.

Riders gain a higher feeling of safety if they can be certain that their horses remains calm in almost any situation.

  • Starting ...

Learning to accept saddle and rider should be a pleasurable experience for your horse. I help you to start your horse(s) in a way free of force. The basis is a trust building activity in the roundpen. Based on the horse's curiosity and its wish to belong, it leans quickly to regard saddle, bridle and rider as something new but non-threatening. Generally, it accepts those strange things rather quickly and willingly without coercion or suppression. The result is a horse that learns with pleasure and joy. It feels understood and valued as an equal partner of the rider-horse team.

Here you see a 3-years old colt after a few days under the saddle. Willingly does he react to the rider's aids ...

  • Disobedience ...

A horse by its very nature is not born a malicious creature. Those unpleasant traits it only adopts from incorrect treatment by humans. The reasons are diverse: Miscommunication between horse owner/rider and horse, expression of malaise, insecurity, testing of limits, lack of trust, leadership void etc. A horse needs to feel safe in its rank and must have found its place within the horse-human herd.

  • You cannot properly lead your horse. It leads you more rather than you leading him. It determines on its own where to go ...
  • Your horse does not stand while mounting ...
  • Your horse cannot be shoed ...
  • Your horse bolts out of the box or into the paddock ...
  • Your horse is scared of everything ...
  • Your horse rears and bucks ...

In general, in those cases the solution does not lie only in changing your horses behavior but in enhancing your communication between you and your horse. To reestablish the balance between you two, it requires a highly experienced trainer, who acts as a coach.

  • Imprint Training ... of the new born foal

Within the first 48 horse of a horse's life, a "window" is open where extremely quick learning occurs, both positive and negative. During these hours the newborn apprehends what can be considered harmless and trustworthy. The fundamentals for his character and future behavior towards humans are being build.

Professional imprint training right after birth not only strenghtens the partnership between human and horse but it can also be used to acquaint the youngster early on to things that can only be achieved with great patience later in his life such as the rustling of plastic, the noise of clippers or picking up his feet etc.
